    The consecration of the Cathedral of Christ the\u00a0Saviour in 1883 took place with the participation\u00a0of the legendary choristers of the Chudovsky\u00a0Monastery (Choral director: P. Skvorzov), and\u00a0the no less illustrious Imperial Court Capella\u00a0under the direction of M.A. Balakirev and N.A.\u00a0Rimsky-Korsakov. The year 1901 saw the actual\u00a0founding of the Choir of Christ the Saviour\u00a0Cathedral. The directorship was entrusted to M.V.\u00a0Karpov, a graduate of the Imperial Court Capella\u00a0in St. Petersburg. One of his successors was A.V.\u00a0Alexandrov, the composer of the national hymn\u00a0of the USSR and of present-day Russia.\u00a0After the reconstruction of the Cathedral of Christ the\u00a0Saviour in 1998, the Choir was newly\u00a0founded as well, allowing the traditions of the\u00a0art of church singing of the Cathedral under the\u00a0direction of the Moscow choral directors N.S.\u00a0Georgievsky and S.V. Krivobokov to come to life\u00a0again. In 2000 with the blessing of\u00a0His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II<\/b>, the Choir received the status of the \u00abPatriarchal choir of the Cathedral\u00bb.\u00a0Since 2007 the Cathedral Choir has been directed by\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Ilya Borisovich Tolkachev<\/b>.<\/p>\n

    Ilya Borisovich Tolkachev, born into a family\u00a0of Orthodox priests, gained early experience\u00a0in the founding and conducting of a choir\u00a0group when he gathered together the children\u00a0in the church community of his father, Boris\u00a0Tolkachev, Archpriest of Trinity Cathedral of\u00a0Uspensky Monastery in the city of Alexandrov.\u00a0Later on he worked in Moscow Cathedral in\u00a0honour of the Icon of the Mother of God \u201cJoy\u00a0of All that Mourn\u201d under the famous twentieth-century choirmaster N.V. Matveyev. It\u00a0was through the personal recommendation of\u00a0Matveyev that Tolkachev became the director\u00a0of the Cathedral choir.\u00a0Ilya Borisovich Tolkachev is not only a conductor\u00a0but also a well-known composer of\u00a0liturgical choir works, which explains his continuing\u00a0interest in contemporary music. Based\u00a0on its classical background, the Choir invites\u00a0leading Orthodox liturgical composers of Russia\u00a0to collaborate with them \u2014 which is important\u00a0on a missionary level. Works by contemporary\u00a0composers are presented during the\u00a0liturgical celebration, which adds freshness to\u00a0the sound of ancient prayers. The Choir creates\u00a0a soft tonal aura which supports clergy\u00a0and visitors in their concentration on prayer.\u00a0Thus the excellent professional performances\u00a0of spiritual choral works continue to preserve\u00a0the spirit of prayer in Orthodox liturgies.<\/p>\n

    Today the\u00a0Patriarchal Choir of Christ the Saviour\u00a0Cathedral<\/b>\u00a0represents the full range of contemporary\u00a0Orthodox music as it reaches an\u00a0audience of millions through the Patriarch\u2019s\u00a0liturgical celebrations via television and due\u00a0to frequent concert activities within and outside\u00a0of Russia. The Choir acquired significant\u00a0success through their performances in Milan\u00a0(Milan Cathedral) and in Rome (Saint Peter\u2019s Basilica).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
